Project Description:
Renovation of the existing three-story barracks (45,000 ft2) included structural upgrades to meet IBC 2003 and TI-809-05 codes. The upgrades for the partially reinforced existing brick structure included installation of reinforced concrete shear walls with foundations and improving floor diagram to shear wall connections to provide sufficient resistance to design lateral loads.
The project also included a three-story addition (4,000 ft2) located adjacent to the existing barrack building with the wall/foundation systems consisting of reinforced concrete and CMU construction. Floor construction consisted of composite concrete and metal deck over steel joists. In select areas, reinforced concrete floors were utilized to laterally transfer high shear loads at the first floor lobby. To allow for personnel communication between the new addition and existing structure, large wall openings were created in the existing brick walls which required the installation of built-up steel beams (lintels) to bridge over the openings.
